Due to the increase in the volume of imports into Iran since early 1960, consequence of which was to employ many foreign flag vessels to trade within Iranian ports caused some concerns to the country. In addition, the need and importance of a regular carriage of goods by sea and considering peculiar geographical characteristic, accessibility to open seas, with having had long water boundary and water ways to and from Iran made the necessity in initiating a research study to establish the first and biggest integrated national shipping lines. The result of the research study, which was started in 1961, was approved by the first general assembly meeting to establish Iranian National Shipping Company on August 1967 with the name of Aria Shipping Lines.
Aria Shipping started its activity in 1967 by two small size vessels with capacity of 1000 and 1550 tones in Persian Gulf area and 4 ocean going vessels, namely, Aria Sep, Aria Far, Aria Naz and Aria Gaam with the total capacity of 61,252 tones that had been put into service between the Persian gulf-Europe, Asia and America. By the end of 1978 the number of Aria shipping vessels was 42 with the total capacity of 525,000 DWT which proved the increasing of the sea transportation volume by Aria shipping lines and its effective role in Iran economy.
After the victory of Islamic Revolution and change of economical and political policy on January 5, 1979, the authority renamed the Aria Shipping to Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) and affiliated the company to the ministry of commerce.
During the imposed war, numerous vessels such as Aria Boom, Aria Jahan, Aria Shaad, Aria Omid, became constructive total loss by missile attacks, as a result of which, the IRISL suffered dearly. In recognition of the glorify and remembrance of the names of martyrs, the names of the vessels changed into with the prefix IRAN and followed by the names of martyrs and cities.
At the present, the IRISL owns a fleet of 115 oceangoing vessels with more than 3.3 million DWT along with 7000 highly efficient employee both at sea and ashore and being able of transporting 22 million tones of cargo annually.
IRISL currently operates seven 2500-2750 TEU container ships on its Eastbound and Westbound services. As well as weekly calls to Bandar Abbas, Nhava Sheva and Dubai, the line has recently included a fortnightly outward call at Malta. Further expansion to other destinations in Syria and Libya is expected.
IRISL can trace their earliest beginnings back to 1967 when the company was founded as the Iranian National Shipping Company (INSC). The following year saw the commencement of marine activities with two small coastal vessels which were operated under the name Aria Shipping Lines. Later the same year the company introduced their first regular liner operation to Europe with 4 ocean-going vessels of 40,338 DWT. This service was later extended to cover Mediterranean ports.
By 1978, just 11 years after the company's formation the fleet stood at 42 vessels with 520,000 DWT. In January 1979 the company was re-named as the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line and affiliated to the Ministry of Commerce.
Since then, the expansion of the IRISL fleet has accelerated still further. The company now directly owns 115 ocean going vessels totaling 3.3m DWT and is rated as the 22nd largest carrier in the world... and number one in the Middle East !
The IRISL fleet comprises a huge variety of modern ocean going vessels consisting of general cargo, multi-purpose, container, bulk carriers and tankers. In addition IRISL own a substantial stock of 20' and 40' standard ISO containers, accepting 20ft and 40ft dry van, open top and flat rack containers.
